Joe Sims is new BBC Radio Bristol breakfast show presenter

By Martin Booth  Friday Sep 15, 2023

Joe Sims says that it is “an honour and a privilege” to be named as the new host of the BBC Radio Bristol breakfast show.

The actor, best know for his roles in Broadchurch and Doctor Who, will take to the airwaves for ‘Joe Sims at Breakfast’ as part of a radical overhaul of the Radio Bristol schedules.

Current drivetime presenter Claire Cavanagh will be presenting her final show soon before transferring to be a newsreader on the new breakfast show, which is due to start in October.

There is no room in the new schedule for popular presenters including Steve Yabsley, who Bristol24/7 understands will remain at BBC Bristol but in a production role.

Radio Somerset breakfast show host Claire Carter will present the weekday afternoon show across BBC Radio Bristol and Somerset from 2pm to 6pm.

“As the proudest Bristolian in the world, I cannot wait to roll up my sleeves and get cracking as the new presenter of the BBC Radio Bristol Breakfast Show,” said Sims, a regular panelist on Bristol24/7’s annual EatDrink24/7 guide and who recorded a campaign video backing Marvin Rees for re-election as mayor in 2021.

“It’s an honour and a privilege as so many brilliant presenters have gone before me.

“I promise you I will knock my pipe out to provide a boat load of fun, love and laughter to everyone in my favourite city on the planet.

“I really hope everyone will tune in and join us on this exciting journey.”

Radio Bristol executive editor, Gareth Roberts, added: “Joe Sims is Mr Bristol, everyone knows him, and it seems he knows everyone – it’s hard to find anyone with more passion and pride for this city.

“Joe’s infectious humour and natural warmth will make his new breakfast show this autumn, the must listen to radio programme in Bristol.”
