Kingswood bar shut over assaults record

By Louis Emanuel  Thursday Feb 25, 2016

Forty-five per cent of all violent crime in Kingswood is related to Bar Celona, according to a licencing hearing which has led to the bar and nightclub being shut down.

South Gloucestershire Council revoked the Regent Street venue’s licence, citing “unacceptable demand on police resources”, after hearing a record of 26 assaults from 2012-2015 – all between the hours of 10pm-4am.

Clive Summerill, South Gloucestershire police inspector, said: “Together [with the council] we uncovered underage drinking, shoddy training and recording practices, and amateur door staff.”

The council said the bar was warned in 2015, and an action plan was also drawn up to help prevent any future problems occurring, but this only resulted in a temporary improvement.

The main complaints included poor management and record keeping, broken CCTV, admitting drunk customers, admitting banned customers, letting underage drinkers in and a number of serious assaults which the staff did not act upon.
