Labour leadership contender Keir Starmer visits Bristol
Bristol mayor Marvin Rees welcomed Labour leadership hopeful Keir Starmer to the city on Sunday.
Starmer spoke to Labour members, held a Q&A session moderated by Bristol South MP Karin Smyth and visited the First Bus depot in Lawrence Hill where he was joined by Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy.
Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire has already declared her support for Starmer, who in December’s general election helped campaign in three out of Bristol’s four constituencies.

The former human rights barrister drove a biomethane-powered bus at the depot before meeting party members at the Rose Green Centre in Whitehall.
In an interview with the Bristol Post, Starmer said that what he can offer the people of Bristol as Labour leader would be “to come to Bristol as I’ve done many, many times, to continue listening to people in Bristol and hear their concerns, and ensure that we can deliver a plan for government that the people of Bristol think is the right plan, and that they can trust us to implement it in government”.
He added: “We’ve had far too much division. We need a leader who can provide the most effective opposition to Boris Johnson’s government, and we absolutely need a leader that can take us into government next time because we focused very much on the 2019 election and the reasons we lost, but we’ve lost four elections in a row now. And we have to win the next general election.”
