Labour members in Bristol react to Starmer’s election as leader
Bristol mayor Marvin Rees has led the congratulations for Keith Starmer as the former director of public prosecutions was elected as the new leader of the Labour Party.
Rees tweeted: “Congratulations @Keir_Starmer. Great news for @UKLabour @LabourBristol and the country. Leadership that’s needed as we take on the biggest public health crisis in a century and face it’s economic, political and social fallout.”
Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire called Starmer “a leader for our times”. She added: “They are the most difficult of times but I know he will serve the country above all.”

Bristol South MP Karin Smyth said that she was “obviously delighted with today’s results”, while Bristol North West MP Darren Jones called Starmer’s win “a stonking victory” and that he was “ready for the march back to Government”.
Bristol deputy mayor Craig Cheney said: “Great news that @Keir_Starmer has been elected leader of the @UKLabour Party. Time to pull together now and get through this national crisis.”

Former Labour group leader in Bristol, Helen Holland, also tweeted her congratulations to Starmer and new deputy leader Angela Rayner: “So excited for the new era for @UKLabour and a positive and productive relationship with @LabourCllrs and @LGA_Labour.”
Both Starmer and Rayner visited Bristol during the 2019 General Election in a bid to drum up support for Labour’s parliamentary candidates.
