Last chance to save south Bristol pub
Residents trying to mobilise enough community support to secure the future of the Windmill are urging people to back their campaign before it’s too late.
The pub was put on the market in January 2019 but, after failing to secure a buyer to take on the business as a going concern, the current owner has now submitted plans for the building to be turned into flats.
Residents hoping to save the pub by raising funds through a community share offer have been thrown a lifeline in the form of support from the Plunkett Foundation, which supports community businesses, but they have to act quickly to prove they can drum up the necessary funds and backing.

“We’re up against a very tight deadline,” says Tessa Fitzjohn, one of the small group of residents behind the campaign to bring the pub into community ownership.
“The owner Mike Cranney is generally supportive of our plan to raise funds through a community share offer but has agreed a deadline of January 27, 2020 for us to show evidence that we can raise the funds.”
The group is hoping to secure expert advice and funding from the Plunkett Foundation, which has made a provisional offer. This is dependent on evidence that the pub is well supported and, as such, the campaign group is urging people to fill in a survey to express their wishes for the future of the Windmill.
