Latest bridge to close for repairs for up to two years
Sparke Evans Park Bridge is the odd one out in Bristol City Council’s restoration of New Cut bridges.
It’s the odd one out because this bridge crosses the River Avon between Sparke Evans Park in St Philip’s Marsh and the Paintworks, not the New Cut.
Sparke Evans Park Bridge is due to close from Monday for up to two years in a restoration project expected to cost some £2m.

In his splendid book, From Brycgstow to Bristol in 45 Bridges, Jeff Lucas describes Sparke Evans Park Bridge as “one of the highlights of the Bristol bridge walk”.
The bridge is very similar to the recently reopened Gaol Ferry Bridge and was designed only a year earlier by the same firm, opening in 1933.
It even has a sister bridge located in the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, also designed and constructed by bridge builders David Rowell & Co.
