Legendary Bristol pub to reopen
An estate agent sign hanging outside a pub in Montpelier has been scrawled over. Instead of saying, ‘Site acquired for development’, it now says, ‘Site acquired to stay a pub’.
As more pubs across the UK are turned into housing, the Star & Garter will be returning to its original use with a well-known Bristol character at the helm.
“I’ve been asked to run the legendary Star and Garter pub with my family,” wrote Malcolm Haynes on Facebook.

In 2015, former landlord Dutty Ken started started a a fundraising bid to help pay a hefty tax bill to keep the pub on Brook Road open.
After his death the following year, his family too over the running of the pub, which is well-known for its late night parties and graffiti-strewn walls.
New landlord Haynes has worked on Glastonbury Festival since 1990 and is now part of its senior decision-making team.
In 2005, Haynes created and programmed the Dance Village which was revamped in 2014 to Silver Hayes. This year he was also instrumental in the successful return of St Paul’s Carnival.
