Live: Bristol council elections 2016

By Louis Emanuel  Sunday May 8, 2016

After the new mayor of Bristol was declared on Saturday, prospective city councillors will be finding out their fate at the local council election count throughout Sunday. All 70 seats are up for grabs in the first all-out elections for the city since the rules were changed in 2015.

Here is a live table with seats won for each party as they are declared:

7.30pm

Finally! We have a result. The Tories pick up two in Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze, with Liz Radford and also Geoff Gollop, who polled higher than any other councillor in the city. Lib Dem Claire Campion-Smith picked up the other seat.

That’s everything. The political landscape of Bristol has changed dramatically. And this time it will stay like this for four years. Here is a final breakdown of seats. Hover or click on the colours to see the total seats:

7.15pm

Clifton Down result is in and the streets have been painted green up there. Carla Denyer and Clive Stephens have taken both seats up there, leaving the party on 11, down from 14 when they started the day.

There’s just one more declaration to be made: Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze, currently going through its second re-count. Announcement expected shortly. And then we can all go home.

6.53pm

Another lull here in Whitchurch. There are re-counts going on in Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze and Clifton Down. They are the only two wards left.

6.36pm

The Green Party has put a stop to the march of the Reds as Charlie Bolton and Stephen Clarke are re-elected in Southville. Labour’s Robert Massey lost by 16 votes in third.

6.30pm

And they keep on winning. Olly Mead is re-elected in Horfield. And they could have had another too, but Teresa Stratford fell short by just one vote to Claire Hiscott, Conservative. One vote. One cruel vote.

6.23pm

That’s it. It’s official. Labour have an overall majority after they picked up two seats in Ashley ward. Michael Davies and Anne Johnson won them. Greens retained one through Judith Brew-English.

6.08pm

There is a lull in proceedings here in Whitchurch, with five wards and 12 seats still to declare. Bristol City Council is the very last local authority in the UK still counting votes. Looks like Horfield is next to be announced.

5.31pm

Labour take both seats in Easton. It’s another split with the Greens who come a close second and third to Ruth Pickersgill and Afzal Shah. That leaves them on 34 and heading for overall control of the council, surely.

5.28pm

Another big loss for the Green Party as their mayoral candidate in 2012, Daniela Radice, is beaten in Bishopston & Ashley Down. Tom Brook, Labour, picks up one seat while Eleanor Combley Green, picks up the other.

5.10pm

Labour have won two more seats, this time in Avonmouth & Lawrence Weston where Jo Sargeant and Donald Alexander are elected. The Tories managed to hold on to one through Matt Melias. That leaves Labour on 31. That’s one more than they had after the last election in 2015. It’s also just five more to go for that overall majority.

5.02pm

BIG RESULT: Green Party group leader Ani Stafford-Townsend has lost her seat. And so has former Green Party group leader Rob Telford. Kye Dudd and Paul Smith, both Labour, win the newly created Central ward, with Smith beating Stafford-Townsend by only seven votes. Here is Kye Dudd, who got the most votes, with 1,051:

5pm

Redland is painted green as Fi Hance and Martin Fodor are re-elected. Labour snapping at their heels.

4.40pm

Bit of a breather here between declarations. We’ve got 10 more wards to go. Just to recap, Labour are stealing the show here:

4.30pm

Frome Vale result just in. Two seats split between Labour and Tories. Labour’s Nicola Bowden-Jones elected alongside Lesley Alexander.

4.15pm

Labour also paint St George Central, a new ward, completely red. Steve Pearce and Nicola Beech picking up the seats. Labour now have 26. They only need another 10 to gain that overall majority. In other news: Horfield is going to a second re-count.

4.11pm

Labour have kept hold of Lawrence Hill by a very comfortable margin. Hibaq Jama and Margaret Hickman both picked up more than 2,000 votes each. Greens the closest rivals.

4.10pm

Hengrove and Whitchurch Park results announced. Two seats for Lib Dems Harriet Clough and Tim Kent. One for Labour’s Barry Clark. Ukip have lost their only seat here.

4.03pm

Conservative Party now picking up both seats in Stoke Bishop. Peter Abraham and John Goulandris both elected. Never in doubt really. We’ve now done 20 wards.

4pm

Labour sweeping through Windmill Hill now where they’ve won both seats. Lucy Whittle and Jon Wellington elected.

3.55pm

Brislington East is split between Tory Tony Carey and Labour’s Mike Langley.

3.50pm

Brislington West has gone to Lib Dem Jos Clarke and Labour’s Harriet Bradley.

3.41pm

Two more for Labour in Hillfields where Craig Cheney and Anna Keen have been elected. That’s 17 in total now. Way ahead. But will they pass the 35 mark to gain an overall majority?

3.35pm

Mark Bradshaw and Celia Phipps are elected as Labour councillors in Bedminster.

3.32pm

Another two for Labour. Helen Godwin and Brenda Massey are home and dry in Southmead. Re-count underway in Bishopston and Ashley Down – that’s the third re-count so far.

3.30pm

Labour double in Eastville. Mahmadur Khan and Mhairi Threlfall re-elected.

3.25pm

And it’s another double for the Conservatives in the safe Tory ward of Bishopsworth. Richard Eddy and Kevin Qyartley re-elected.

3.20pm

Conservative group leader Mark Weston has been re-elected in Henbury & Brentry. He came third in the police commissioner elections on Friday too. Colleague Chris Windows joins him so it’s a Tory double.

3.17pm

And another two for Labour! Jeff Lovell and Chris Jackson retain their seats in Filwood.

3.15pm

Two more for Labour as they retain both seats in Lockleaze. Gill Kirk and Estella Tincknell elected.

3.10pm

The results continue to roll in steadily. But not everyone is happy (Bristol is one of the last places in the country to finish its count):

3pm

Greens take another seat, this time in Cotham where Cleo Lake has won. Lib Dem Anthony Negus also held onto his seat. There is a re-count now in central ward too. Rumour has it that there are just 6 votes in it.

2.45pm

BIG RESULT. Charles Lucas, Conservatives’ mayoralal candidate, has lost his council seat. The Green party have swept up in Clifton. Paula O’Rourke and Jerome Thomas elected. Lucas didn’t hang about for the declaration. Here he is pictured at yesterday’s count:

2.45pm

More seats for the Lib Dems. Leader Gary Hopkins has retained his seat in Knowle and is joined by colleague Chris Davies. Clifton up next where mayor candidate Charles Lucas is defending his seat.

2.30pm

Stockwood results are in and it’s two wins for the Conservatives. Steve Jones and Graham Morris elected. Some Happy Tories here:

2.35pm

Labour take all three seats for Hartcillfe and Withywood. Mark Brain, Helen Holland and Paul Goggin. Stockwood next. Here’s Helen Holland, leader of the party, after the results:

2.15pm

There will be a recount in Horfield ward. We were on the cusp of a declaration, but the ballot papers have been sent back. The ward currently has one Conservative, Claire Hiscott, and one Labour, Olly Mead.

1.45pm

One of the big questions today is whether or not the Green Party will continue their impressive surge over the last few years. But they may well have reached their nadir now that Jeremy Corbyn has effectively changed the landscape, splitting some old Greens away towards Labour.

So far today the Green group in Bristol have just missed out twice, coming second in Hotwells & Harbourside to the Lib Dems and second in St George West to Labour.

1.25pm

Bit of a lull in proceedings now. The first three wards were counted quickly as they only have one councillor. More declarations due shortly. In the meantime, new mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees has arrived and is now mixing with the Labour candidates in the counting hall.

Newly-elected councillor Fabian Breckels says he hopes Labour will achieve an overall majority (more than 35 seats), which would make Marvin’s job a whole lot easier as he’ll need a majority to push through things like his budget.

1.15pm

Not much to show yet after just three wards have been declared. But a splash of colour is creeping on to the map of Bristol.

12.55pm

Fabian Breckels, Labour Party, has been elected to St George Troopers Hill. That’s two for Labour now.

12.50pm

Asher Craig, Labour Party, has been elected to St George West. St George Troopers Hill next.

12.30pm

And we have our first councillor. Mark Wright, Lib Dem, has been voted in as the single representative for Hotwells & Harbourside.

12.15pm

We’re expecting our first declaration shortly, and it’s Hotwells & Harbourside. It’s a new ward with a small population. 1,826 people voted there out of 3,935 (46.4 per cent)

11.40am

No declarations yet, but a delivery for one councillor. Eastville councillor Mahmadur Khan had a baby at 1.21am. And he’s here at the cont today, awaiting his next life-changing moment of the day.

11.15am

All wards are being counted now. Some should be finished before others due to the make-up of each ward and the individual turn-out. The overall turnout was 44.76 per cent. The new Central ward had the lowest turn-out, with 35.5 per cent, and Westbury-on-Try & Henleaze had the highest, with 60.56 per cent. The first declaration is due shortly.

10.30am

The count is already underway up here at Park View in Whitchurch. Before any declarations are made, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the current state of play in the council chamber. Labour are the biggest party, with 30 of 70 seats. But they don’t have an overall majority. For that they need 36 seats in total today.

Having made big gains last time around the Greens are now the third biggest party and will be looking to leapfrog the Tories into second today. But the Conservative mayoral candidate Charles Lucas polled double the first preference votes of Green rival, Tony Dyer, yesterday.

10.15am

Just a quick reminder about what happened yesterday: Marvin Rees was elected mayor of Bristol in a resounding victory over George Ferguson. Full story here.

After his victory, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn rushed to Bristol to celebrate with campaigners and Marvin on College Green.
