Lord mayor gets a lift at new harbourside development
Dressed in a pink hi-vis vest and matching pink helmet and safety boots, Bristol lord mayor Cleo Lake dangled from a basket attached to a crane above one of the last remaining sites to be developed next to the Floating Harbour.
The occasion was the topping out ceremony of Brandon Yard, just off Anchor Road opposite the SS Great Britain – with panoramic views over the water one way and St George Primary School at the foot of Brandon Hill the other.
As the man basket was lowered gently down onto the top of the roof, two roofers continued banging away.

“That was fun,” Lake said as she stepped out of the man basket and a celebratory glass of bubbly was thrust into her hand.
The 19th century listed building that Lake had been lowered down onto used to house the purifier for the gas works that were originally on this site.
Brandon Yard is now being transformed into luxury flats, which Lake quipped that not many people at the ceremony would be able to afford but were “aspirational” for Bristol nonetheless.
Lake and a few dignitaries from the developers took to a microphone next to a yew tree and then it was time to get back into the man basket, lowering the lord mayor back down to earth.
