When Maggsy met Marv
Marvin Rees proves he does have a funny side with a star slot on Doorstep Sport TV’s spoof show.
Setting out to interview ‘boxer Martin Reeves’, presenter Neil Maggs is less than impressed when he finds he is actually sitting with the mayor of Bristol, who rises to the occasion, putting in a fine performance in the role of ‘unamused politician’.
The spoof clip received top billing at Rees’ State of the City address in the Wills Memorial building last week.
is needed now More than ever
Maggs, who is a regular contributor to Bristol24/7’s sports pages, says: “I am known for doing sport challenges with a twist. I’ve done them with some of the leading stars in the city, such as Bristol City player Bobby Reid, former World Champion boxer Lee Haskins, and recently retired Bristol Flyers’ captain Greg Streete, among others.
“As a Bristolian, I like to pick out the local ‘Bristol boys done well’ and have a bit of fun with them. I am essentially playing a character – someone that’s not impressed by celebrity and feels he can take them on. He wants to smite the high and mighty and usually loses or cheats when he wins.
“This time I fancied doing one with a non-sportsman. I know Marvin loves sport, particularly boxing, so I fancied doing one with him. I approached his office and was surprised they agreed. His acting was brilliant and I must say demonstrates he has the ability to laugh at himself which is great.”
Maggs’ TV show, Doorstep Sport, is about community sport, delivered in a comedic way and features a series of silly challenges.
The presenter revealed there are some big names involved in the next series, with plans to expand out and interview more politicians and leaders in the city.
The second series of Doorstep Sport will air on Made in Bristol TV soon.
