Police tape surrounded the area of the sunken roundabout that has been occupied by squatters first thing on Tuesday.

All was quiet in the Bearpit by mid-morning on Tuesday

By mid-morning, officers had left the scene, and all was quiet, with just a small handful of people lingering in the area, as others walk through the central thoroughfare.

Bristol City Council, which is responsible for the Bearpit, has not issued a statement at this stage.

The future of Bristol’s sunken roundabout has been a subject of contention for some time. A group of people took up residence in the empty shipping containers and former Bearritos bus several months ago, and an attempt to convict them was postponed in April.

Confirming details of the incident on Tuesday morning, an Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.15am today to Bristol Magistrates’ Court to reports of an assault.

“On attendance, we found a man with a wound to his face.

“The assault is believed to have taken place in St James Barton underpass and a 42-year-old man was arrested nearby in connection with the incident.

“Ambulance services were in attendance, but the man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

“An investigation is underway and an area of the underpass has been sealed off while enquiries continue.”

A South West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.14am and attended with an operations officer, HART (Hazardous Area Response Team), and an ambulance.”
