Cold case rape: Man charged

A 62-year-old man has been charged with the rape of a woman in Bristol almost 35 years ago.

Stephen Alan McCafferty, from the Thetford area of Norfolk, has been charged with one count of rape.

Avon and Somerset Police said the charge relates to the rape of a 22-year-old woman on July 15 1981 in Wells Road, Knowle.

The woman was raped on Wells Road in Knowle 35 years ago

The force added that it has been “reviewing the case continually since the offence occurred and recent enquiries have led to this significant development”.

McCafferty appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on New Year’s Eve.

He was remanded in custody until his next hearing, at Bristol Crown Court on 28 January.
