Man’s body recovered from Floating Harbour

By Alison Maney  Monday Feb 8, 2016

The body of a man was pulled from the Floating Harbour on Saturday about 12 hours after he was spotted struggling in the water.

The man, who was in his 20s, got into trouble in the water near Welsh Back soon after midnight on Saturday morning. It is not yet known how the man came to be in the water. He has not yet been formally identified.

Police wish to speak to anyone who was in the area late on Friday night night or in the early hours of Saturday morning, particularly anyone who saw the man enter the water.

Inspector Shaun Finn said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in a young man’s death. We are determined to find out how this man ended up in the water and would like anyone who saw or heard anything to call us.”

The inspector further noted that the icy cold water could have immobilised the young man, even if he had been young and fit.

“The cold water can really shock the body in a matter of seconds, making it extremely difficult to swim or stay afloat.

“While trips and falls might happen, we’d strongly advise anyone against deliberately going in the water, as what might seem like a harmless dip can go horribly wrong very quickly.”

Two bodies were pulled from the Floating Harbour last year. On February 5 a man fell in to the water after attending a night out at Thekla. On November 23 the body of Andrew Bakehouse, 49, was recovered from Redcliffe Quay.
