Marmalade Trust launches #NotAlone Campaign

By Ben Wright  Thursday Dec 6, 2018

Age UK research in December 2017 found that 873,000 older people have little or no contact with people over the Christmas period, with 55 per cent saying they rely on the TV for company.

Marmalade Trust’s #NotAlone Christmas campaign, developed by Tusko, one of our Better Business members, aims to tackle the problem.

The Bristol-based charity has gone from strength to strength since it was established in 2013 by founder and CEO Amy Perrin. It raises awareness of issues around loneliness and actively supports people through friendship projects and events.

Marmalade Trust is a National loneliness charity, but in Bristol it is also the main provider of Christmas Day companionship for those alone.  Amy set about establishing fun, community-based Christmas dinner events that anyone who felt lonely could attend for free.

The new campaign features people talking about what it means to be lonely

On Christmas Day, the Trust’s guests are picked up from their homes by a volunteer, and taken to their nearest event where they can enjoy a dinner of turkey and all the trimmings, put on a paper hat and have a good chat with the person sat next to them: all things that most of us take for granted every December 25.

Amy says: “The #NotAlone campaign has been instrumental in concentrating our fundraising efforts in the run up to Christmas. One of our biggest challenges is telling Marmalade’s story and what we do.

“Tusko have created video, photography and a marketing campaign that helps to get the message about loneliness out there.”

Loneliness can have a serious impact on our health: studies have found it can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The Marmalade Trust is having an enormously positive impact on hundreds of lives across Bristol. One thank you card the team received read: “This was the first time in 16 years I was not alone on Christmas Day.”

As well as support from Tusko and Bristol24/7 (who are helping the campaign with £2,000 worth of marketing support), the Marmalade Trust are also receiving support from two other Better Business members. Workbrands will be providing design work, while social media and PR support will come from Caragh Jones, huggg‘s partnerships manager.

You can make a difference to someone’s life this Christmas. Go to www.marmaladetrust.org and click donate. You can also share this message online or on social media.

As part of our Better Bristol initiative, Bristol24/7 is offering a local charity £2,000 worth of marketing support each quarter. This quarter’s charity is the Marmalade Trust. If you’d like some more info on this or on Better Bristol please contact [email protected].
