Marvin Rees named UK politician of the year
Marvin Rees has been named politician of the year in the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards 2020.
Bristol’s mayor won the award for the politician “who has done the most to advance the cause of the green economy in the past year”.
Rees’ success was not the only accolade for Bristol, with The Wave winning Green Building Project of the Year and OVO Energy, whose UK headquarters are on Temple Quay, winning the award for Company of the Decade in Thursday’s online ceremony.

Responding to the news of his accolade, Rees tweeted: “Chuffed to have won this award for our ambitious work towards achieving #Bristol’s net-zero target and driving forward an inclusive, sustainable economy through local leadership.”
The award came on the same day as Rees appointed a number of new deputy members to his cabinet team:
- Celia Phipps, deputy cabinet member for adult social care
- Paul Goggin, homes
- Carole Johnson, communities, equalities & public health
- Tim Rippington, transport
- Lucy Whittle, climate, ecology & sustainable growth
- Brenda Massey, education & skills
- Tom Brook, city design
“Right across Bristol, local Labour councillors are making a real difference as champions for their communities,” said Rees.
“Together, we have a proud record of standing up to Government cuts and protecting local jobs and services – which has never been more important.
“Our new deputy cabinet members will bring additional energy and experience to delivering for the whole city.”
