Maya Jama takes a trip down memory lane at Cotham School

Radio 1 presenter Maya Jama returned to her former school as part of a campaign to encourage young people into teaching and inspire future generations.

The star, who was a student at Cotham School from 2005 to 2011, took a trip down memory lane as she fielded questions about her own experiences growing up in Bristol.

The 25-year-old attended a performing arts course in London after leaving Cotham and has gone on to forge a successful career as a radio and television presenter as well as being an ambassador for Savera UK, a charity that supports people at risk of harmful practices or domestic abuse.

Friday’s visit was organised in partnership with Cosmopolitan magazine and the Department for Education as part of their “Get into Teaching” campaign.

The project intends to inspire people and to encourage them to get into a teaching career.

Jama spent the day at Cotham School, meeting current pupils and catching up with her former teachers.

She took part in a Q&A session on her memories of the school with a Year 9 class, answering questions on topics ranging from her favourite teachers to school dinners.

She described her overall experience of Cotham School as “fun, free and insightful”. She also spoke of how a former teacher, Kim Baker, encouraged and supported her acting ambitions.
