Millennium Square event cancelled due to safety fears
Concerns about growing numbers of people have led to the closure of the Vintage Winter Wonderland event in Millennium Square.
Many people were surprised that the event was allowed to go ahead with Bristol being in tier 3, with the decision now made not to reopen the site on Tuesday.
Millennium Square landowners We The Curious had been working closely with the event operators, James Rogers Event Attractions, and Bristol City Council, to try ensure that the attraction remained within government guidelines.
is needed now More than ever
But there has been increase of numbers around the Harbourside area which is likely to increase, with crowds outside the site unable to be controlled by event organisers.
We The Curious chief executive, Donna Speed, said: “As a space where people come together, it’s vital that any activity on our spaces meets the Government safety guidelines for current restrictions, but also that it feels safe to people.
“Due to the number of people in the wider Harbourside area, and the projected increase in visitors over the Christmas period, it will likely create pinch points and bottle-necks around the Millennium Square site.
“We need to play our part in public safety, especially given the current restrictions; and by learning from other attractions in other cities, it’s the right thing to do at this moment, to remove the Vintage Winter Wonderland attraction.”
