‘We need a sustained investment in cycling’
More investment in cycling is needed for Bristol to beat its crippling congestion according to a new study which shows that trips by bike have increased in the city following an investment programme to encourage cycling for shorter urban journeys.
The Sustrans study identified that the government-funded programme led to an increase of 40 per cent in the number of trips made by bike in Bristol compared with 2007 figures.
This represents the second-highest leap of all towns and cities monitored under the Cycling City and Towns programme.
is needed now More than ever
Dr Andy Cope, director of the insight, research & monitoring unit at Sustrans, said: “The evidence of the study is clear: increasing levels of cycling in our towns and cities is very much possible.
“The growth in cycle trips in the participating towns and cities reflects the fact that investment comparable to that spent in Denmark and the Netherlands stimulates changes in levels of cycling.
“The study also indicates sustained long-term commitment to investment in cycling is key to growing cycle use.”
