New £8.52m Bristol city centre link to open on Sunday
The new £8.52m link between Baldwin Street and St Augustine’s Parade is set open on Sunday, April 2.
Metrobus works in the city centre have caused months of traffic chaos and misery for road users, who are warned to expect further disruption as the effects of major changes to the network take hold.
is needed now More than ever
Transport bosses say the completion of this latest overhaul marks ‘a milestone’ in their bid to reduce congestion and create more space for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.
Baldwin Street will be closed to traffic from 7am to 5pm on Sunday for the switch over, although the final implementation is weather dependent.
Under the new system, traffic will be unable to take a right turn, northbound, from Baldwin Street to Lewins Mead, or left, southbound, from Rupert Street to Baldwin Street.
Diversion routes will be in place throughout the day on Sunday when the road is closed and signs are already in place to direct drivers around the new system.
Work to link cycle routes is due to start soon and bikes will have a dedicated link from Castle Park all the way to the Hippodrome, completing the half-finished Baldwin Street segregated path, although this will not be ready by Sunday.

Bristol City Council says ongoing improvements to the city centre transport networks are expected to continue until autumn 2017.
Mark Bradshaw, the council’s cabinet member for transport, has overseen the implementation of this project but he will stand down on April 14, in order for mayor Marvin Rees to take personal control of transport and congestion in Bristol.
