New academy hit by delays gets planning boost

By Charlie Watts  Thursday May 5, 2022

Bristol City Council has approved plans for a new secondary school in the south of the city.

Oasis Academy Daventry Road will be built next to The Park Centre, which recently moved into a new building.

The community centre’s old building, which was home to Merrywood School until 2000, will now be knocked down to make way for the new school.

The 900-place academy, which is not set to open until 2024, will become the first secondary school in Knowle West in more than 20 years.

The “much-needed” school was first announced back in 2019 – and Bristol South MP Karin Smyth has since spoken out about delays to its opening.

To meet the need for school places from September 2023, the school could first open in temporary accommodation – on the site of Oasis Academy John Williams in Hengrove.

CEO of Oasis Community Learning, John Murphy, said: “We are delighted to share with the local community the name of the new academy and thrilled that plans have been approved by Bristol City Council.

“It marks an important step forward in the project to deliver Oasis Academy Daventry Road; a secondary school that will be passionate about the progress of every student and deliver an exceptional education for local young people across south Bristol.”
