New ‘bullet trains’ to be based in Bristol
A ‘bullet train inspired’ fleet will be maintained in a new £80 million depot in Stoke Gifford near Bristol Parkway station.
Hitachi Rail Europe (HRE) will be creating 150 jobs and hoping to recruit local engineering talent to help maintain the new InterCity Express trains.
The Durham-built trains will run on the Great Western route, the line connecting the South West of England to London and Wales.
New recruits will work on readying trains for passengers, ensuring they are safe and clean with regular engine tests, changing wheel sets and thorough inspections.
Rail minister Paul Maynard said: “This is great news as it shows how our long-term investment in the modernisation of the rail network is creating new skills and new jobs.
“More people than ever before are using trains and this government remains committed to providing a modern, state-of-the-art fleet supporting the network our country needs for the future.”
Links are being made with local schools and colleges where HRE hopes to promote STEM subjects. The Stoke Gifford depot will also recruit four new apprentices every year once the depot is fully operational.
