New home for old barge bought by city council for £1.4m

By Martin Booth  Friday Nov 13, 2020

It is a saga that has gone on for more than a decade and which has left many people across the city scratching their heads.

In 2019, Bristol City Council spent £1.4m buying the 137ft-long Ebenhaezer and its prize mooring rights from a private owner.

Moored on Welsh Back next to the Redcliffe Bascule Bridge for many years, the barge has now moved a few hundred yards away to Bridge Quay close to Bristol Bridge.

Bristol City Council paid the seemingly extravagant sum for the barge because it was in the way of a development planned to transform a pair of disused dockside warehouses on Welsh Back into three restaurants.

The Ebenhaezer’s former resident did not want to move and developers said that they would not go ahead with the regeneration of the buildings if the boat was still there.

Council officers said that buying the barge was the most cost-effective way to break the impasse, with the fear being that if developers pulled out of the restaurants deal, the city council would need to pay to repair the largely derelict buildings anyway.

Bristol24/7 understands that repairs needed to be completed on the barge before the Ebenhaezer could be moved, with the city council now hoping to sell the vessel in order to recoup their investment.
