New parking app to launch in Bristol

By Martin Booth  Monday Dec 3, 2018

Bristol has been chosen as the first city in the world to trial a new parking app that hopes to reduce congestion with the help of real-time crowdsourced data.

The app, Parklook, has been in development by an international team for the last three years and aims to help drivers find on-street parking through information shared by users about the location of nearby spaces.

The pilot scheme of the app begins this week around Gloucester Road and North Street, two areas of Bristol where residents are particularly concerned about high levels of congestion.

Research has shown that the average driver on North Street parks for just six minutes and is one of 35 cars an hour at peak times looking to park for just a single errand, such as buying a takeaway coffee.

On average on Gloucester Road, only two spaces were available in a 30-minute period in some stretches of the road.

Parklook founder and CEO Alexey Shinkarenko said that he hopes the potential benefits of Parklook will not just be for drivers but for the wider community, thanks to the reduction in pollution and traffic congestion.

He said: “Bristol is a very forward-thinking city with a strategic vision for the future, a core element of which is to improve movement of people and services citywide.

“We hope that this app will contribute to the successful development of one aspect of this strategy.”
