New plans for new bridge across New Cut

By Mia Vines Booth  Sunday Sep 10, 2023

Bristol’s cabinet member for transport has suggested plans for a new bridge over the New Cut are now being seriously considered.

Writing on the mayor’s blog, Don Alexander celebrated the reopening of Gaol Ferry Bridge but said conversations were needed about the need for another bridge in the area.

A new bridge over the water could link the newly reopened Chocolate Path to Coronation Road close to its junction with Camden Road.

“As we continue to tackle the backlog of repairs that we inherited, and as our city’s population continues to grow, our administration is also looking ahead to future opportunities for a new crossing,” Alexander wrote.

Planning permission for a bridge over the New Cut at Camden Road was granted back in 2015.

“The previous administration cancelled plans for one over the New Cut, despite planning permission and Department for Transport funding being in place,” the cabinet member added.

“We are now in the process of revisiting those proposals as we look to reassess the business case for a new crossing.”

There are just three pedestrian and cycle bridges linking south Bristol to the city centre: Vauxhall Bridge, which links Southville and Spike Island; Gaol Ferry Bridge linking Southville to Wapping Wharf; and the Langton Street Bridge – better known as the Banana Bridge – from the eastern end of Bedminster across to Redcliffe.

There are limited details about the new bridge and, despite the reopening of Gaol Ferry Bridge, a number of bridges along the New Cut are still in urgent need of repair.

Vauxhall Bridge and Sparke Evans Park Bridge, which links the Paintworks development with Sparke Evans Park, are next to be restored.
