New sculpture appears on Jamaica Street
The artist known only as Getting Up To Stuff picked what has been described as a fitting location for his latest work.
The sculpture on the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC) building on Jamaica Street depicts a man in a hooded jacket and scarf standing with his dog and holding a game of Monopoly in his hand.
“Monopoly: the game you win when everything is unaffordable,” is the message the artist wrote on Instagram when the statue appeared on Tuesday.

Crafted in the artist’s trademark grey, the new statue is located outside the PRSC HQ, where efforts are ongoing to launch a community land trust scheme in a bid to tackle the increasing gentrification of the area.
Commenting on the statue on Instagram, PRSC said the new sculpture “seems to suit this spot perfectly, addressing homelessness in the face of property being used as investments, out of reach for a growing section of society”.

Standing just below Lawrence Hoo’s CARGO workspace within the PRSC building, the man and his dog is the latest piece by the artist who is behind a number of intriguing works, including the moving sculpture of a boy and teddy above Jacob’s Wells Road to raise awareness on World Suicide Day, Ruth, the defiant woman with a handbag and hammer who appeared on Victoria Street, and a tribute to cloakroom attendant Victoria Hughes by the toilets on the Downs.
