New study finds Bristol’s festive lights make people feel safer

By Blaise Cloran  Friday Nov 17, 2023

A new study shows festive lights aren’t just useful for raising the Christmas spirit.

A new survey by Bristol’s Business Improvement District (BID) has found that festive lights are actually making people feel safer in the city.

People said the presence of festival lights made them feel more secure as the evenings got darker, as well as making their commute home a more enjoyable experience.

BID is planning to add more winter lights in trees around the harbourside, the BRI, Park Row and Welsh Back, alongside Christmas lights already installed on Union Street and Broadmead.

The festive lights also help the city increase its popularity as a destination for Christmas breaks.

BID unveiled its new love-themed light installations on Corn Street last year, as part of its festive programme launched in 2018.

The programme has been adding lights all over the city such as sparkly disco balls and seasonal tree lights that are LED and energy efficient to keep the power costs down.

Christmas preparations are well underway in Bristol, with Joe Sims from BBC Radio Bristol turning on the 50-foot Christmas Tree in Clifton Mall Gardens earlier this month, as part of a scheme that aims to promote and enhance the Clifton experience.

Cabot Circus welcomed hanging star lights and a giant walk-through Christmas tree in its centre, just in time for the opening of the Bristol Christmas Market.

BID Redcliffe and Temple also run a charity Christmas Tree festival in St Mary Redcliffe Church, a one hour winter lights photography walk and a Christmas concert in effort to raise money for local charities.

The events are run to raise funds and festive spirits while also offering an occasion to reflect during the Christmas period.
