New workspace on derelict warehouse site takes shape

By Rachel Sutherland  Tuesday Oct 4, 2022

Behind the historic walls of the former J S Fry warehouse, the latest phase of Wapping Wharf is taking shape.

The main structure of the new workspace, nestled on the corner of Wapping Road and Cumberland Road, has now been completed.

Like its retail and restaurant counterparts, CARGO Work has a shipping container aesthetic that has been designed to fit Bristol’s industrial dockside setting.

Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

The building will have balconies and terraces on all floors, with sweeping views over the River Avon and south Bristol.

When the interior is completed, the four-storey workspace will accommodate up to 230 people and is designed to suit one or a small number of organisations.

The new build also features a glazed steel-framed courtyard canopy and ‘shipping container’ exterior metal cladding.

The work is being undertaken by Bath-based workspace design and build experts Interaction and is set to be finished by Christmas.

After that, the office floors within the open plan space will be completed.

Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer of Wapping Wharf, which includes CARGO Work, said: “Now that the main building is complete, you can get a real feel for how inspiring this space is going to be to work in, with plenty of light and fantastic views to the south.

“But just as important, any company deciding to make this their base will immediately become part of the Wapping Wharf community and all it has to offer.”

The developers say sustainability has been considered in the design of the building.

Its roof panels will take full advantage of the site’s sunny position to create solar energy and the building will be low in energy use.

There will be 47 secure bicycle racks and seven parking spaces with electric vehicle charging provision.
