Newspapers to no longer be provided in Bristol libraries
The removal of newspapers from all of Bristol’s libraries has been described as “educational and cultural vandalism” by a former MP.
From Saturday, newspapers will no longer be provided in the city’s libraries.
A sign informs library-goers that the decision has been taken “due to the financial pressures Bristol City Council is currently experiencing”.

The sign says: “Due to the financial pressures Bristol City Council is currently experiencing, there are changes to some council services.
“Newspapers and periodicals will not be available in Bristol libraries from October 1st 2022.
“This is a temporary pause in the newspaper service and provision will be reviewed in the next financial year.”

On Friday afternoon in Bristol Central Library, one reader in the reference section was perusing the printed copy of the Financial Times.
Friday’s copy of the Daily Telegraph was on display, with a nearby sign informing that digital copies of all newspapers are now available to read on the Libby app.
Former Bristol West MP Stephen Williams tweeted: “Educational and cultural vandalism by Bristol Council, ceasing to provide newspapers in its libraries. Today is the last day to read a paper in the library, something done by Bristolians for over 200 years. It will save hundreds of pounds, while the Mayor squandered millions.”
Bristol City Council have been asked for comment.
