North Pole adventure sets sail from Bristol

By Isabelle Jinadu  Monday Jun 20, 2016

Explorer David Hempleman-Adams has launched his latest Arctic adventure from Bristol.

His boat Northabout sailed out of the harbour at the weekend on its way to the North Pole.

The veteran of more than 30 Arctic expeditions is hoping to travel round the pole and return via Greenland in a single season.

He’s taking a team of seven with him including 14-year-old Ben Edwards. The team will be living in cramped conditions as their living space will be shared with all the food and fuel required for the journey.

If successful the team will become the first British team to complete the challenge, which only became possible recently due to the retreat of sea ice.

The boat will be travelling from Bristol, to Russia, to Canada and back in a challenging four month expedition.

The expedition is hoping to raise awareness of the effects climate change, to draw attention to the ways in which we can avoid it, and to highlight the importance of taking responsibility for the future of the Artic.
