Old City roads closed for War of the Worlds season three filming

By Martin Booth  Sunday Aug 8, 2021

A black Ford Mondeo reversed at speed down Broad Street on Sunday morning before crashing into a stationary police car.

It then sped off down Wine Street in the direction of Cabot Circus.

Half an hour later, the exact same thing happened: take two of a scene for series three of War of the Worlds, due to hit our screens in 2022.

On its second run, a GoPro camera was attached to the car’s bonnet.

Some explanation for why it needed to reverse came later as a scene was filmed with the car being stopped by another police car pulling sharply out of Newmarket Avenue as it was heading towards St John on the Wall church, boxing it in and forcing it to take evasive action.

The third season of War of the Worlds will be set in present-day France and the UK, and will see the return of actor Gabriel Byrne.

Joining the ensemble cast are Molly Windsor, Ernest Kingsley Junior, Madeleine Worral and Oliver Hembrough. The third season is directed by Indra Siera and Jonas Alexander Arnby.

US television channel EPIX says that the story “picks up as the war between the survivors and aliens reaches a new turning point and a terrifying phenomenon grips countless people across the globe.

“With stakes at an all-time high, one survivor sets out to investigate, forming a tentative partnership with another unlikely hero along the way.

“The pair will need to use every resource they have available to face an opposition more dangerous than ever in their fight, once again, for the survival of all humanity.”

It’s not the first time that filming for War of the Worlds has taken place in Bristol, which doubles as London in the show.

Previous locations have included Frog Lane, Orchard Street, Queen Square, Armada House on Dove Street in Kingsdown, the Create Centre on Spike Island and Stapleton Road in Easton.
