Old Market votes yes to change
Plans which will steer the future development of Old Market have received the support of locals in a first-of-its-kind public vote.
Residents in the area went to the polls last week to vote on a the Old Market Quarter Neighbourhood Plan, devised by locals to help guide planning permission over the coming years.
However, only 10.1 per cent of the 2,941 people eligible cast their vote. In total, 265 people voted for the plans while 31 voted against.
Among the ideas floated in the plan is a proposal to reduce the traffic to two lanes and widen the pavements into a boulevard where pop-up markets can be held.
Paul Bradburn, chair of Old Market Community Association, worked on the plan. He said: “The whole creation of the plan has been quite a challenge, but having such a high ‘yes’ vote from the local residents at the referendum is an excellent endorsement from the community.
“The area is changing rapidly and to know that our plan will help steer that change in a positive way makes all the work worthwhile.”
The neighbourhood plan will be formally incorporated into the Development Plan for Bristol when it is confirmed by a meeting of all councillors.
