One-way pedestrian system installed near Millennium Square

By Martin Booth  Thursday May 7, 2020

Arrows on the floor near Millennium Square are believed to be the first official attempt in Bristol to enforce social distancing outdoors.

Several large black arrows were painted on Thursday on Cathedral Walk and Millennium Promenade leading towards the Harbour Inlet.

The land that the new signage is on is part of the private Harbourside development.

Some of the arrows are also on the route of the Brunel Mile, highlighted in Bristol City Council’s walking strategy from 2011, which had the aim “to increase walking through developing, promoting and maintaining safe, secure, convenient, efficient and attractive infrastructure”.

In London, mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled plans to transform the capital’s streets to accommodate a huge increase in walking and cycling once lockdown measures lift.

Under the Streetspace initiative, pavements will be widened and extra cycle lanes put in to allow people to travel to work while maintaining social distancing.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees recently announced that he wants to “quicken the pace” of work to pedestrianise the Old City.

Rees and his cabinet member for transport, Kye Dudd, said that the city council is planning a host of schemes to deter car use and encourage active travel.
