Only one week left to register to vote

By Bristol24/7  Monday Apr 13, 2015

With just one week to go before the 20 April registration deadline for the general and local election, the Electoral Commission and Bristol City Council is calling for anyone who is not yet registered to go online and do so at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before it’s too late.

The elections watchdog has been running a national media campaign reminding voters that they cannot take part in the election unless they have registered.

Electoral Commission research indicates that recent home movers, young people, students and those from certain BME communities are all less likely to be registered to vote. The Commission’s campaign aims to let people know that everyone can now easily apply to register online; this is the first general election where this has been possible.

Nicola Yates, Electoral Registration Officer for Bristol City Council, said:

“Anyone not yet registered to vote should do so as soon as possible if they want to be able to have their say on a whole range of issues that affect their everyday lives. It’s been five years since the last general election and we don’t want anyone to miss out on having their say on polling day.”

Kay Jenkins, Head of English regions at the Electoral Commission, said:

“With only one week left until the deadline for getting registered to vote, time is running out for anyone who hasn’t got around to doing it yet. It now takes just a few minutes to complete a registration application with the new online system so we are encouraging everyone to do this as quickly as possible before the deadline on 20 April.”

For anyone looking to vote by post the deadline is 5pm on Tuesday 21 April.  If you want to vote by proxy the deadline for your application is 5pm on Tuesday 28 April.  You must be registered before you do either.

Ballot papers for the 2015 general and local elections are expected to arrive with voters around 10 days before polling day.

Postal votes can be returned any time up until 10pm on that day. Thursday 7 May.

If you have not received your postal vote pack by 30 April 2015 please call us on 0117 922 3400.

Anyone who would like more information on registering can get in touch with Electoral Services on 0117 922 3400 or email [email protected].

The registration deadline is at midnight on Monday 20 April 2015.
