Open doors reveal Bristol’s past and future

By Chris Brown  Friday Sep 12, 2014

Doors across Bristol will be thrown open this weekend to give visitors a glimpse into the city’s past and its potential future.

Bristol Door Open Day (DOD) and Bristol Green Doors Day are both running this weekend.

The Bristol DOD is in its 21st year now and will see more than 60 locations across Bristol running opening for members of the public to explore.

Among the new locations on the map this year are the state-of the-art new Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre and the iconic tiny Edwardian cloakroom on Park Row.

They will be joining the likes of Redcliffe caves and the Underfall Yard which have been regular features on the DOD map over the years.

Technical problems meant the event website was shut for most of yesterday but, all being well, you can access the site at www.bristoldoorsopenday.org.

While visitors to DOD can glimpse the history of Bristol on Saturday, between 10am and 4pm, Bristol Green Doors Day aims to show how the environmentally friendly homes of the future could look.

Twenty homes and properties across the city will be taking part, including family homes that have drastically reduced their energy bills by improving insulation, switching to energy-efficient appliances, and making use of some of the latest renewable energy technologies. One Bristol home taking part has cut electricity bills by 90%.

Bristol Green Doors director Dan Weisselberg said: “More than 100 homes across Bristol have now taken part, with more and more people looking to make their homes energy smart, reducing bills and making their homes warmer and more comfortable places to be.”

Homes taking part will include a house fitted with the latest solar photovoltaic thermal panels, a refurbished student property, a terrace of houses with external wall cladding and a range of period properties – where homeowners will be showing how draughty old buildings can be made easier to heat.
