Outpouring of well wishes for Big Jeff on his return home from hospital

By Betty Woolerton  Tuesday Nov 29, 2022

The news that legendary Bristol music fan Jeffrey Johns is returning home from hospital has been met with dozens of messages of support.

Known as ‘Big Jeff’, the artist and gig-goer shared to friends and supporters that he is being released from Southmead Hospital after months of being treated for serious burns.

Jeff was injured in a house fire in his flat in Totterdown in June and spent two months in the severe burns unit at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

There, he spent more than three weeks in an induced coma and eight weeks in intensive care as doctors battled to save his life.

Now, the familiar sight of Jeff attending gigs in Bristol may soon be on the horizon as he announced he is being discharged on Tuesday.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Ive got dome big news to announce, i thought  what with it being the world cup i would announce it in the style of a football chant. Ahem clears voice “Im Being Discharged In The Morning, Discharged In The Morning, Im Being Discharged in The Morning”  im nervous.”

Over one hundred well-wishers have flooded Twitter with support, with one writing: “He’s coming, Jeffery’s Coming Home”. Your courage and strength through all of this has been inspiring, and has surprised none of us.”

When he was in Southmead Hospital, the artist added a splash of colour to a window when he was commissioned a painting in association with Fresh Arts.

Jeff thanked staff there, calling the support and treatments he has received “absolutely first class” and “world pioneering”.
