Overwhelmingly positive reaction to Princess Victoria Street pedestrianisation
Babies were pushed in buggies along the middle of the road, a cyclist carefully weaved through pedestrians, and a scooter rider pushed his vehicle past customers sat on outdoor tables and chairs.
Princess Victoria Street in Clifton Village is now pedestrianised and the traffic chaos prophesised by naysayers has yet to appear.
This was, however, a sunny Sunday afternoon and some local traders are still extremely concerned about the cost of the trial scheme on their businesses; with some car drivers also lamenting the loss of parking spaces on the road.
is needed now More than ever
But the overwhelming reaction to the pedestrianisation of the short stretch of the street is positivity.
Chris Ginger Timmins said: “I work on the stretch that has been pedestrianised and apart from it making some deliveries a bit tricky I think it’s brilliant.”
Also writing on Facebook, Sam Marsh said: “Looks fantastic! Friendlier, less polluted, safer and business will benefit if the stats are true.”
Steve Lount added: “I’ve just come back from Clifton Village and I welcome the pedestrianisation of Princess Victoria Street, limited though it is.
“I just don’t get the negativity. It applies to a small stretch of road barely 100 metres long. People can park anywhere else they can find a space, as I did in Caledonia Place just around the corner from here. If anything it encourages more people to come out and visit.”

The stretch of Princess Victoria Street between Waterloo Street and Regent Street is now closed to motorists from 11am to 5pm seven days a week.
Mayor Marvin Rees said that the scheme is an example of taking “bold action”, with Clifton councillor Paula O’Rourke telling the Bristol24/7 Behind the Headlines podcast that the street “will be a cleaner and safer place for community use (making) Clifton even more vibrant and exciting”.
