Park entrance reopens after years of closure

By Charlie Watts  Thursday Feb 24, 2022

A community’s access to a public park has been restored after a wait of more than four years.

The Knowle West entrance to Filwood Park was fenced off in late 2017 to allow for 150 homes to be built on part of the green space.

But the development has since been completed, and the entrance on Creswicke Road at the junction of Filwood Broadway is now open.

A footpath runs into the reconfigured park, and a new road into the development is also set to open next to the path.

Filwood Park connects Filwood Broadway to Hengrove Way, but up until now has only been accessible via the latter.

It is next to Filwood Playing Field and Filwood Green Business Park, and includes a new play park and yet-to-open community building.

Filwood Tree Champion Jim Smith has welcomed the reopening of the entrance, but expressed some reservations about the changes to the park.

He said: “I am very pleased I can now walk through what’s left of the park, but it is half the size it was before.

“There used to be a skate park area, but now there is only something for children and nothing for teenagers.

“But it is still a great green space for dog walkers and people going from Knowle West to Hengrove.”
