Thousands raised to save starving penguins
A Bristol Zoo campaign to save starving penguin chicks has raised nearly £50,000.
Launched last month the campaign is aimed at saving African penguins, whose population has fallen by 98% in the last century.
The money will support a rehabilitation centre in South Africa, which is supported by Bristol Zoo. Every winter, hundreds of African penguin chicks, who have been abandoned by their parents foraging for food, are rescued.
is needed now More than ever
However, this year the chicks came in earlier than expected and in their hundreds from the colonies. With the price of fish rocketing this season, an extra £20,000 was needed buy food.
Dr Christoph Schwitzer, Director of Conservation at Bristol Zoological Society said: “Unless conservation charities such as us intervene, these chicks would starve to death. We wanted to help so we launched an urgent appeal. We have been overwhelmed by the unprecedented level of support the appeal has received.”
