Pet rabbit dumped by bins in Fishponds

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Jan 19, 2021

The RSPCA has issued an appeal after being called to rescue a pet rabbit found abandoned by bins on a Fishponds street.

The bunny, which has been named Piccolo, was spotted by a member of the public, who initially thought it was just an empty cage and alerted the charity when she noticed the live animal inside.

RSPCA deputy chief inspector Simon Coombs rescued the rabbit from Shannaways Close on Wednesday.

“He’d been abandoned by the bins like rubbish, clearly unwanted,” said Simon.

“Unfortunately, this is something we see all too often when owners can’t care for their pets anymore. It’s heartbreaking.”

Piccolo was found inside a red and white plastic and wire cage, along with a metal bowl and straw inside.

The RSPCA is appealing for information to track down the people responsible for abandoning the rabbit.

“We understand that things are tough right now and that people’s circumstances can change at any time but it’s not acceptable to abandon an animal in this way,” said Simon. “If you’re struggling, please ask for help.

“And if you recognise this bunny or know where he may have come from, please contact our appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

The black and white male rabbit is now being cared for by RSPCA Bristol Animal Rescue Centre. If he isn’t claimed then he’ll soon be available for rehoming.
