Petition to stop Dominos opening in Westbury

By Laura Collacott  Friday Jul 29, 2016

Westbury-on-Trym residents are petitioning planners to stop Dominos Pizza opening in the village.

The pizza chain was awarded permission by the council to open a store at 68 Westbury Hill, but residents argue that it will destroy the area’s character, pointing out that there is already a branch in BS9 less than a mile away.

Dominos’ initial application was blocked by resident opposition but granted on appeal.

“It will destroy the nature of the village and create waste”, worries local resident Sharon Smithen.

“A fast food take way in the heart of an historic village and conservation area feels like a further eroding of the unique community in Westbury-on-Trym village that high street chains such as Tesco and Costa threaten,” say neighbour Katie Dulake.

Independent pizza restaurant Flour & Ash has recently opened in the neighbourhood, taking over Casamia’s former premises.

Dulake adds: “Bristol Council should be encouraging and protecting such artisan businesses and employers, NOT allowing the insidious creep of chain franchises to erode independence, craft and choice.”
