Plans for new permanent ‘gypsy traveller’ site revealed
Plans have been revealed to a create a new permanent “gypsy traveller” site in south Bristol.
Bristol City Council has earmarked a piece of industrial land at the end of Western Drive, off the A4174 Hengrove Way, for the encampment.
With space for six to eight pitches, the council says the site in Hengrove would be one of the smallest of its kind in the country.
is needed now More than ever
“We have chosen this site because it has close links to local services and facilities, good access to the road networks in and out of the city and because there is demand for this type of housing in the south of the city.” the council wrote in a letter to neighbouring residents.

The council hopes the new site will help address a shortfall of 32 pitches for gypsy travellers and show people across the city. It hopes it will also lead to a reduction in the number of unauthorised encampments.
The council says “no decisions” have yet been made on the site. The cabinet will be asked to approve the plans at their meeting in February, and then a planning application will need to be submitted.
If approved, the site would back onto Hengrove Park, which is set to have 1,430 new homes built on it.
The encampment would be part of an industrial estate next to Hengrove Leisure Park, where a further 350 homes are set to be built.
