Plans for new pontoon on Floating Harbour
A section of the Floating Harbour could be transformed into a “living water park” with plans revealed for a new pontoon.
Mayor Marvin Rees has laid out proposals for Capricorn Quay, which would see a “large floating ecosystem” built combined with 32 new moorings.
The new pontoon in the Harbourside would create reed beds that would form 1000 square metres of habitat – improving water quality, supporting stronger fish stocks and providing a haven for birds, the mayor wrote.
is needed now More than ever
Located by Capricorn Quay, a residential development on the site of the Lime Kiln Dry Dock, it would be connected to the existing bridgehead, formerly used by ferries, and accessible by a gated footway ramp.
“Significant investment is needed to keep the harbour running, and our plans for a new pontoon at Capricorn Quay are a step in the right direction,” Rees wrote in his blog.

The mayor added: “Combined with an integrated floating ecosystem, that connects nearby protected habitats, to improve homes for wildlife as well as overarching biodiversity value and climate resilience for the city.
“This is in line with the One City Ecological Emergency Strategy goal for 100 per cent of Bristol’s waterways to have excellent water quality which supports healthy wildlife.
“The project will provide a large area of floating habitat that will be both visually attractive and functional.
“It will transform this section of the harbour into a ‘living water park’, the subsurface forest of roots will provide shelter for fish and ideal feeding grounds, improving fish stocks.
Rees added local residents will be made aware of the planning submission and more information about the plans.
