Plans revealed for latest phase of Finzels Reach regeneration

By Ellie Pipe  Monday Dec 10, 2018

Plans for the £140m redevelopment of the former Avon Fire and Rescue HQ are to go on public display for the first time.

The latest phase of the Finzels Reach regeneration project will include a contemporary office building, featuring a corkscrew staircase rising through a glass atrium, and 300 new homes – 20 per cent of which will be affordable.

Left Handed Giant’s brewery and brewpub, a new restaurant by Peter Sanchez-Iglesias of Michelin Star restaurant Casamia, and a café by Spicer & Cole are all set to open next year.

Cubex, the developer behind the plans, is inviting members of the public to comment on the proposals before they are submitted to Bristol City Council in the new year.

They will be on display in the marketing suite at Finzels Reach, from 3pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday (December 11).

Executive director Gavin Bridge said: “This year has been pivotal for Finzels Reach as it’s really come into its own.

“The acquisition of the Avon Fire HQ site allows the place-making journey to continue, to deliver more much-needed homes and work space for the city through carefully considered design.

“And, importantly, a mixture of types of housing; including build-to-rent and affordable to create a balanced community, complementing the range of homes within the wider Finzels Reach neighbourhood.”

The first phase of the Finzels Reach development has seen the creation of new homes and offices, as well a 168-bedroom Premier Inn hotel.

Cubex has now secured funding to develop the former fire service HQ speculatively, before tenants have committed.

Developers say the building will reflect similar design principles to Aurora – the current Finzels Reach office block, with its high environmental and digital connectivity credentials.

The 300 new homes will be built in apartment blocks, ranging from seven to 16-storeys high.

The buildings will include a rooftop terrace, shared entertainment space, cycle storage and maintenance facilities, as well as co-working space at ground floor level.

Planned improvements to Temple Street, Counterslip and Temple Back include better cycle and pedestrian routes, new trees and soft landscaping.

Work on the redevelopment of the former Avon Fire and Rescue site is likely to start in the summer of 2019, subject to planning approval.
