Plans submitted for new 1,600-place secondary school in St Philip’s
Plans for a “much-needed” secondary school in St Philip’s that could meet acute need for places in the area have taken a step forward.
A planning application for a major redevelopment on Silverthorne Lane, that includes 367 homes – 20 per cent of which will be affordable – student accommodation, commercial spaces and the new 1,600 school and sixth form have been submitted by Feeder Estates, a partnership managed by Square Bay.
The school will be run by Oasis Community Learning, which already operate eight others in Bristol, and the development will form part of the ambitious Temple Quarter regeneration plans that include the creation of a new £300m University of Bristol campus.

Ally Eynon, development lead for Oasis Academy Temple Quarter, said: “We are so pleased with this major step forward as we work towards delivering a new school to serve the central east area of Bristol, where there is an acute need for places.
“We are holding a series of meetings in the community to set out our vision for the school as we work with prospective parents, businesses, community organisations, residents and young people to create the school they want and need.
“We are now very hopeful that planning permission will be granted so that we can get on with building a fantastic new centre of learning for the city’s young people.”
The planning application includes outline proposals for a new academic and office building to be developed by The University of Bristol. This, the developers say will “provide a mix of commercial and academic functions, complementing the nearby Temple Quarter Campus”.
Square Bay, the firm behind the regeneration of Brandon Yard, say the project will also include restoration of remnants of historic buildings.
The homes will be delivered by Bristol-based Studio HIVE and “will form part of a vibrant new canal-side quarter with extensive landscaping, a canal-side walk and terraced piazza and 80,000 sq. ft of commercial and community space”, say those behind the plans.
