Plan to plant 1,000 trees in Bristol

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Aug 6, 2019

Planting trees has the potential to empower communities to help solve the major environmental problems facing society, according to the founder of an ambitious new project.

Naseem Talukdar has already been making waves with the launch of Plastic Pollution Awareness and Action Projects (PPAAP) in Bristol, a charity that works to eradicate single-use plastics from the fast food industry. He is also the founder of Feed The Homeless.

Naseem has now announced plans for an ambitious bid to plant 1,000 new trees in the city by the end of the year, with more to follow.

“Planting trees is one of the most inspiring ways to engage various diverse communities in Bristol, while educating people about the environment and pollution,” says Naseem.

“We want to empower people to be able to connect and understand the impact of their actions on the planet and planting trees should be beyond any social or faith boundaries and allow us to be part of the solution.”

The vision is to collaborate with different community and faith groups, youth clubs, sports clubs, universities, schools and the police with the aim of educating people about the environment and taking shared ownership of the project and tree maintenance.

Naseem and the PPAAP team have already got The Woodland Trust on board, which will donate the trees for planting, and the backing of mayor Marvin Rees. They now need to secure land on which to plant.

“We are seeking land owners to come forward and allow this to happen,” continues Naseem.

“We will be doing a crowdfunding campaign to coordinate the project and enable us to showcase it and create an example for other cities to follow.”

The mayor said: “I’m very keen to hear more about Naseem’s project and we’re already speaking to officers in our Parks team about things we could do to help.

“I’d recommend other city land owners such as the BBC, churches and universities join us in considering practical ways of supporting Naseem in achieving his tree planting goals. I’ve asked my team to set up a meeting with Naseem so he can tell us more about what he wants to achieve and what we can do.”
