Poldark – set in Cornwall but made in Bristol
New BBC One drama series Poldark, which begins on Sunday night, may be mainly set in Cornwall but while filming took place last summer the production was based in Bristol.
All of the miners’ hats and some of the principle characters’ hats were also made by Ani Townsend of The Milliners’ Guild in St James Arcade in Broadmead.
Sets built in The Bottle Yard Studios in Hengrove included the Red Lion pub and the interior of Nampara, Ross Poldark’s home.

The production team coordinated the complex shoot from The Bottle Yard’s production offices and also based a comprehensive costume department on-site, complete with sewing, dying and fitting rooms for the hundreds of period costumes.
Other filming locations included historic Chavenage House near Tetbury, Prior Park College in Bath, the Cornish town Charlestown and the Botallack Mines at St Just.
Poldark Producer Eliza Mellor said: “We chose The Bottle Yard Studios as they had great spaces for our set builds, gave us outstanding access to Cornwall where we filmed over the summer and are increasingly a thriving production centre which made it a really good base for the Poldark team.”
The Bottle Yard Studios has emerged in recent years as a leading centre for film and TV production outside London, attracting a host of major UK and international productions, including most recently BBC Two drama Wolf Hall, BBC One drama Sherlock, and Disney/ABC Studios’ musical comedy Galavant.
