Prefab homes on stilts could be built in a car park next to St George’s Park

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Feb 21, 2019

An innovative solution to the hosing crisis could be coming to a car park in St George.

A pre-application has been submitted for 11 homes on stilts over the Chalks Road car park next to St George’s Park.

Taking over a few days to construct, the one- and two-bedroom homes will be built above the central parking aisle with no parking spaces being lost.

ZEDPods take advantage of existing hard standings, can be erected within days and generate more energy than they use

The pre-application reveals that the development will become a “mixed community, potentially young people in temporary accommodation and at risk of homelessness, and other people in need of affordable, good quality homes, such as key workers”.

The homes would be a semi-permanent development, with the “air rights” above the car park leased by Bristol City Council to the developer for 30 years.

The city council will become the first in the UK to receive the modular homes from ZED Pods, which were previously seen at the Bristol Housing Festival exhibition on Waterfront Square in 2018.

ZED Pods homes meet the government’s Nationally Described Space Standards which sets the minimum acceptable area of living space

ZED Pods operations director Dr Rehan Khodabuccus said: “The site in St. George was selected due to its access to the Church Road retail area and proximity to the local supermarket and amenities.

“When combined with the easy access to local public transport networks, train station and the centre of Bristol; the site becomes ideal.

“ZED Pods was chosen as a partner for this trial due to the company’s desire to address key worker and affordable housing issues as well as the company’s focus on zero carbon, sustainability and belief in quality homes for all.”

A public consultation event on the proposals is taking place at the Beehive Centre in Stretford Road, from 3pm to 8pm on Friday, March 1.
