Preview: Local News Matters

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Mar 23, 2017

Local news organisations, including Bristol24/7, will be gathering for an event at Watershed to discuss how local publications can stem the tide of fake news and continue to publish high-quality news in an era of rapidly digested digital content.

This event forms part of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ)’s Local News Matters campaign, which has been created in reaction to the year-on-year cuts to local editorial jobs, and the closure of newspaper titles – more than 300 in the past decade.

Cuts to local news ‘pose a threat to democracy’, the NUJ say, and their week of action in 2016 was a bold attempt to raise awareness of the issue.

Smaller events will take place around the country this year, including in Bristol, where the public are invited to quiz representatives from Bristol24/7, BBC Bristol, Bristol Post, Voice Network, ITV Westcountry and The Bristol Cable. Speakers will also include Laura Davison, NUJ national publishing organiser.

The event will be held on Friday, March 24 at 7pm. To find out more or book tickets, visit: www.watershed.co.uk/whatson/7974/local-news-matters
