Primary schools in Bristol decide whether to reopen

By Martin Booth  Sunday Jan 3, 2021

Parents across Bristol are unsure whether to send their children back to their primary schools on Monday.

Some schools already had inset days planned for Monday, others have scheduled an emergency inset day on Monday while others will only be open for children of keyworkers for at least the next week.

Government advice is to send children back to schools. But on Sunday in Bristol, headteachers were making decisions based on their schools’ individual circumstances.

Here is what we know so far. This page will be regularly updated as we receive more news.

  • Sea Mills Primary School is to be closed for two weeks from Monday to all pupils except for the children of key workers and vulnerable children.
  • Perry Court E-ACT Academy in Hengrove will only be opening on Monday for children in Reception, Year 3 and Year 6 due to staff absences.
  • Air Balloon Primary School in St George is not reopening on Monday, with parents and carers informed in a letter from headteacher Tim Browse on Sunday that there will be an inset day. “At present, for the vast majority of schools, there has been no new guidance for schools and, for many members of the education profession, this is a real worry,” Browse wrote.
  • Whitehall Primary School is not reopening on Monday – with a “significant number of staff” supporting the NEU’s call for it to be open for the next two weeks only to key worker and vulnerable children.
  • May Park Primary in Eastville will be closed to children on Monday.
  • All Oasis Academy schools are closed on Monday and now also Tuesday, but at the moment still due to reopen on Wednesday.
  • Bridge Learning Campus in Hartcliffe is closed on Monday to all years from nursery and reception to Year 6, due to staff shortages. The school will reopen on Tuesday but only for children of key/critical workers and to some of the most vulnerable children. Headteacher Rupert Maule informed parents and carers at 6.30pm on Sunday evening that the school will reopen to all other children “no sooner than Monday, January 11, “possibly later”.
  • Closures are also likely at Summerhill Infants in St George, Sefton Park in Ashley Down, Broomhill Juniors in Brislington and Cotham Gardens.
