Prince Street bridge finally reopens

By Ellie Pipe  Monday May 22, 2017

Prince Street bridge has finally reopened to pedestrians and cyclists for the first time in almost two years after a prolonged closure for repairs.

“It doesn’t look any better,” muttered one unimpressed passer-by – one of the first to cross the newly refurbished 138-year-old structure over the Floating Harbour on Monday afternoon since its closure in August 2015.

But still shrouded in scaffolding and prominent signage as it is, the bridge’s reopening will come as a relief to many, in particular nearby businesses which have suffered as the works were hit by delays and setbacks.

Bristol City Council has confirmed that the link will reopen to southbound vehicles once the scaffolding has been removed and further testing conducted.

This is intended to give the traffic network flexibility and capacity to allow two major traffic schemes in Prince Street and at Temple Gate to be completed.

Campaigners have called for a vehicle ban on the bridge to ease pollution and improve safety, but the council has confirmed the one-way traffic system will remain in place until at least summer 2018, at which point the mayor will review its use.
